CHAPTER 13

Dave pounded on the front door.

When Herb opened it, he shoved his way in and slammed and bolted the door after him, breathing hard.

“Are you alright?” Herb said. “Did you see something? We heard a commotion.” He went immediately to the television screens mounted by the front door that showed twenty different views from around the property. All was quiet.

“Someone in a silver car just shot at me with a high-caliber weapon that had a silencer attached,” Dave said grimly.

Herb’s eyes went wide. “Here? This happened just now? I just spoke with you five minutes ago!”

Dave nodded. “Obviously, they missed, but only because I spotted the gun coming up and had time to duck. Otherwise I’d be lying dead in your yard.”

“Are they still here?” Herb said. “Cathy!” he called over his shoulder. “Cathy!”

“I heard them drive away but that means nothing. They’re probably regrouping somewhere close by, waiting to see if the police come, but they’ll definitely be back. Can you wind these tapes back about ten minutes? I was over near the fence on that road—” he pointed.

“Begonia?” Herb said. He tapped a view. That’s camera thirteen—” He tapped a series of buttons and they watched as Dave walked backwards and then forwards through the events of the last few minutes.

He hugged the fence line talking on the phone, shook the phone for a moment, dialed a number, looked over and dove to the ground, just as the world around him exploded in gunfire. They didn’t get any footage of the car or the gunman on the street.

“You need to call the police. They’ll want to see that footage. Amber’s phone died and --”

“Cathy!” Herb screamed. He turned back to Dave. “We can’t call the police. You’re fine, really, and--”

“What do you mean we can’t call the police? They’re here to kill us. The police will protect us.”

“It’s out of the question,” Herb said firmly. “What could our story possibly be? It’s fantastical. No, we’ve been warned. We know they’re here. We’ll be okay.”

“We wouldn’t have to tell the whole truth. Just say there was a drive by shooting, or--”

“In Bel Air? Please. This all happened right as Amber woke up--”

“Amber! You’re awake!” Dave said, striding into the sunken living room towards her. He leaned over and hugged her tight and she groaned. “Sorry,” he whispered, letting her go.

Amber looked like hell, pale, shaky, and bruised from both her fight with Twin and her Rejection Syndrome. Her entire body ached, and her mouth was so dry it was kindling.

“Cathy!” Herb screamed again just as she came down the hall carrying towels, yoga pants and a heavy sweatshirt. “I’m right here,” she said. “Did you need something, Hun?”

He put his hand on her arm. “We need to—” His cell phone rang, and his face lost all its color when he saw their number. “Sorry, I have to take this,” he muttered as he went into the kitchen.

Twin sat on the other couch beside Malcolm. She had finished going
